Denver And Rio Grande Railroad Steam Locomotive Bell

Denver And Rio Grande Railroad Steam Locomotive Bell

This is a rare d&rg marked locomotive bell from a small or narrow gauge engine. Probably pre-1900, possibly from a predecessor narrow gauge railroad.

The bell itself measures 12 icnhes wide by 9 inches tall. The yoke seems to be of a later type than the bell and carries the numerals 'w5212' over '2515' on the top bracket. The brass finial may have been part of the original mounting as it doesn't quite fit the presnet arrangement. The lfat bar with holes that serves as the ringer arm is a later addition. I've seen an engine or two whose bell had such a bar, but it also suggests some other use of the bell after it was removed from its locomotive.

This bell evidently went though many a rebuilding along with the equipment ti served. If anyone has any additional information that could further date or identify thsi bell, please contact me. 'd&rg' is stamped no the top in 5/16 letters, makes a bright ring. Toatl shipping weight is 88 pounds.

Edit please note that the d&rg is stamped, not cast, onto the flat top of the bell midway between the edge and the bolt hole. The low angle lighting in the photo tends to make the letters look raised to some. It would be neat if it were cast on, if that's the way any of the railroad's bells were marked, but that's the way it is. The following is from a former owner, to whom i owe much thanksit was off a d&rg 2-8-0 if i remember correct. This bell was from an estate in salida colorado and was from a person who passed away at the age of 93 in the 1980s. He was an engineer for the d&rg and if i can remember he started with the railroad around 1910. It was a real find, and is rare as the bell is about turn of the century 1890-1900s narrow gauge.
